Board of Directors Application

Thank you for your interest in serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Juneau Chamber of Commerce. Serving on the board is a rewarding experience and an opportunity for professional growth. This is a "working" board and a critical resource for the overall operation and success of the Chamber. Completing this form will help you understand the expectations and commitments necessary to serve in this position and confirm your willingness to serve, if elected.

Applications are used by the Board's Nominating Committee to identify and evaluate potential board candidates. All new directors are elected by a majority vote of current members at the annual meeting held on Thursday, October 1. This application will be kept confidential and on file at the Chamber office.

As a member of the board for the Greater Juneau Chamber of Commerce you are expected to:

1. Serve a minimum of one 3-year term, although you are eligible to serve two 3-year terms.
2. Attend Board meetings and important related meetings on a regular basis. The Board meets the 2^nd Wednesday of every month at 2:30 pm at the Chamber Office. Meetings last 2-2.5 hours.
3. Makes a serious commitment to participate actively in Chamber committee work. The four committees meet once each month. (Government Affairs, Events, & Membership)
4. Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments, completing them thoroughly and on time.
5. Stay informed about committee matters, prepare for meetings, and review and comment on minutes and reports.
6. Build a collegial working relationship with other board and committee members to build consensus and ensure the success of the organization.
7. Participate in the Board's annual retreat and planning meeting.
8. Actively participate in membership recruitment for the organization.
9. Actively participate in fund raising activities for the organization, which currently include selling raffle tickets, working at the Annual Golf Classic, or assisting with planning and staffing various networking/fundraising events.

3-4 hours per month including review of board packet and meeting time. 

Held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 2:30pm at the Chamber Office. Meetings last 2-2.5 hours. The undersigned agrees to attend each meeting, as well as required meeting preparation.

2-3 hours per month. Varies significantly per month per committee. 

Committees are formed at the direction of the Board of Directors. Each committee will establish their own meeting dates and times. For EACH committee a board member serves on, they can be expected to spend 2+ hours per month, between meetings and work, with occasional periods of more intense time commitment. Each board member is required to sign up for at least one committee. Current committees include Events, Government Affairs, and Membership. 

8-16 hours annually

The Annual Board Dinner & Retreat takes place each year in November. This is an evening and day dedicated to learning and growing as a board for the new year. Each year, we have a fun dinner with invited family and friends to celebrate the work of the prior year, followed by an 8-hour day that is required by all board members for attendance. Some board members may be asked to help in the preparation of the board retreat which will constitute additional hours annually.

Additional Chamber Events & Activities:

1 hour each week

The Chamber of Commerce hosts weekly luncheons and regular afterhours events. Board members are expected to attend as many of these events as possible. 

6 hours annually, Saturday, 10/10/26

The Annual Dinner is a fall event planned by the Events Committee. This 6-hour event is a requirement for all board members to attend. Some board members may be asked to help in the preparation of the annual dinner which will constitute additional hours annually. The 2026 Dinner will be held on Saturday, October 10. 

6 hours annually, Saturday, 4/24/27

The Chamber of Commerce hosts a spring tasting event in which we ask board members to volunteer their time in preparation for. This could involve planning, preparing, or volunteering for the day of the event. The 2027 Spirits of Alaska event will be held on Saturday, April 24. 

8-16 hours annually

The Chamber of Commerce often participates in community events including but limited to the Maritime Festival, Fourth of July, Gold Rush Days, etc. where board members will be asked to volunteer their time as well.

The Chamber of Commerce traditionally hosts multiple raffles a year. The Board of Directors are required to sell their assigned tickets and help drive sales during this time.
